An Introduction Genre Crossing

Recently we have seen games breaking out of their established genres. This has happened with various games such as Bioshock, Mass Effect and Portal.

But what does this mean for us as gamers.  Some critics such as Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw  say that by having crossover genres  shallow experiences occur.  However game designers such as Epic Games, Game Designer  Cliff Bleszinski say that Role-Playing gameplay (RPG) elements are the future of shooters.

Furthermore it can be seen that other game such as the highly rated Portal, where a shooter genre is mixed with a puzzle game.  This shows that game developers can create a quality cross genre game.

Another good example of this is S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, in the game the player is shown how a Action and RPG game can be rolled in to one.

As we can see genre crossing in games can be shown is becoming more of a trend in the games industry. As we also have seen quality is not diminished by taking elements from other genres.
Hopefully in the future we can expect to see games with more variety and creativity.
